The
Fulbright Teaching Assistantship Program aims to strengthen English
language instruction at Chilean educational institutions by establishing
a native speaker presence. At the same time U.S. participants will
gain intensive cross-cultural interaction and international educational
and/or research opportunities provided at the host institution.
Placements are not available at universities in Santiago.
Proficiency
in Spanish is recommended. Successful candidates must be articulate
English speakers with native fluency.
Grant
period
10 months.
March to December, 2007. (Grant dates must correspond to the academic
year in Chile). The grant period starts with a one-week orientation
seminar organized by the Fulbright Commission in the first week
of March. Attendance at the orientation program is required of
all Teaching Assistants.
Eligibility
Applications
are welcome from graduating seniors and graduate students with
an interest in working in an educational environment. Candidates
with degrees in English, Spanish, Education, or TEFL/applied linguistics
with experience teaching or tutoring are preferred. Other fields
will be seriously considered if combined with teaching experience
and/or coursework in pedagogy.
Conditions
of award
Teaching Assistants will be assigned as language learning assistants
in a university English language department but will not be responsible
for teaching entire courses. Teaching Assistant applicants are expected
to present a program of study or research. In addition to their
Teaching Assistant's activities, grantees may enroll in up to two
academic courses per semester or engage in independent research
related to their field of study under the supervision of a faculty
member. These activities, combined with the Teaching Assistant's
responsibilities, will comprise a full-time program.
In
the application section, “Statement of Proposed Study or Research,”
applicants should describe their study or career interests in addition
to providing a well-thought-out and feasible project. The Commission
will match the grantee with the appropriate university. Details
of assignments will be subject to communication between the Fulbright
Commission and the universities and based on the academic profile
of the selected candidate, the university’s needs, and the
grantee’s research or study requirements.

Affiliations
with universities in the regions (Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta,
Valparaiso, Osorno, Concepción or Puenta Arenas) are determined
by the Commission and the Ministry of Education. Applicants may
contact the Commission to find out the range of possibilities.
Grant
benefits
The
same conditions apply as for the full grant regarding special consideration,
stipend, dependents, housing and travel. Extensions and renewals
are not available.
