Proficient
spoken and written Spanish is required at the time of application.
Academic
year
The Chilean
academic year consists of 2 semesters: March to July and August
to December or mid January. Students who wish to take coursework
for two semesters must arrive in March 2007 to enroll in the full
academic year. Otherwise, students may begin coursework in either
semester and should plan to arrive prior to the start of classes.
Grantees not enrolling in an academic year program of study should
plan to arrive the last week of July 2006 for the Orientation.
Award
period
Awards
are for a maximum of 10 months. Extensions are not possible.
Applicants
Ph.D. candidates
conducting dissertation research are preferred. Graduating seniors
and students working towards a Master’s degree will be considered
with evidence of full-time study or a significant research project.
Fields
of study
The competition
is open to all fields of study. In particular, the Commission
encourages applications from candidates in Science and Technology.
Topics concerning Astronomy, Entrepreneurship, Technology Incubation
and Technology Marketing are of particular interest. Please refer
to the list at the end of this entry for websites of academic
departments actively seeking advanced U.S. graduate students.
Affiliation
requirements
Grantees
will be required to have affiliations with institutions in Chile.
Therefore, applicants must initiate contact with the host institution
of preference prior to submitting the application. The Fulbright
Commission encourages students to obtain a formal letter of invitation
from a university in Chile prior to arrival.
Special
consideration
Candidates already in Chile at the time of application are not eligible.
